‘Choose to be the best,’ advises Jean Henri Lhuillier

May 10, 2013 - The Polytechnic University of the Philippines bestowed the Doctorate of Humanities degree to Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier.

For several years, PUP has been granting the honorary degree to individuals who have excelled in their own fields. This year, PUP chose philanthropist and the Honorary Consul General of San Marino to the Philippines Jean Henri Lhuillier to be the recipient of the honoris causa degree. The conferment was headed by PUP President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman.

Mr. Lhuillier was also chosen as the commencement speaker of the PUP Class 2013. In his speech, he highlighted that, ‘ambition should never be bounded by age,' and any one of them can fulfill their dreams at a very young age especially now that technology is very accessible and has made people powerful.

Mr. Lhuillier also shared with over 3,000 PUP graduates his life principles, which were to always be hungry for knowledge, that success comes from failure, and to believe in oneself. “Whatever comes your way, choose what is right, choose to be the best, and choose to be happy,” Lhuillier reminded the graduates. His speech left them with a challenge to conquer the world and to make a difference in the country.

Jean Henri Lhuillier was acknowledged not only for his achievements but also for his sense of community and his vision of a good society. With this latest achievement, Mr. Lhuillier promised to better serve the Filipino people and the country.

PUP confers Doctor of Humanities Degree to Consul General Lhuillier

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines bestows the honorary doctorate in Humanities (honoris causa) to diplomat and philanthropist Jean Henri Diago Lhuillier on May 10 during its year-end commencement rites at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

PUP President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman confers the degree on the Harvard Business School alumnus who is also the honorary consul general of the Republic of San Marino to the Philippines.

Lhuillier was acknowledged “not only for his achievements but also for his sense of community” and his “vision of a good society that in a moral universe is a vision cognate with mankind, with the universal spirit.”

Lhuillier is known for his corporate responsibility projects in sports and business. He is also noted for his humanitarian activities along the areas of nationwide scholarship program, nationwide day care center feeding program with medical missions, outreach programs, cultural enhancement, and special projects.

The Portuguese Empire was the longest-lived of the modern European colonial empires and if Ferdinand Magellan did not switch loyalty to serve King Charles I of Spain when he “discovered” the Philippines, we would have been, like Macau, a Portuguese colony.

Portugal is now one of the world’s most globalized and peaceful nations and yet what we know about the country could be summarized in two words; Portuguese sardines.

Maybe bacalao and wines could be added to our lexicon of Portuguese products, but most of these items find their way to our shores mostly through Macau.

This state of affairs would soon change for the better if our current Ambassador to Portugal, Philippe J. Lhuillier, succeeds in improving our relations with Lisbon. In the coming years, he plans to increase trade and cultural exchanges between the two countries. He said Portugal has a wide variety of wines, which would give Chile, Australia, and even California a run for their money. The country ranks fifth in 2005 as among the top ten wine exporting countries.

Portugal is where the town of Fátima is located. This is the site where an apparition of the Virgin appeared before three children on May 13, 1071, and has been the site of yearly pilgrimages by millions of Catholic faithful.

Their number one export, however, are shoes. He said we will most probably not see any “Made in Portugal” shoes because the country will manufacture them but stamped by the brand preferred by those who ordered them in bulk.

The most popular dish is bacalao, or dried cod which is usually eaten during Lenten Season, when eating meat is prohibited by the Catholic Church.

At the moment, he said there is much room for improvement in trade and investments. He said the major challenge is to create presence for the Philippines to banish from their minds that Filipinos are mostly overseas maids and seafarers.

This he would do by bringing the Bayanihan dance troupe or holding an exposition similar to the highly successful one held in Paris, France, recently, the “Archipelago of Exchanges,” the country’s first-ever grand culture exhibit in Paris last April 9 to July 14, 2013.

He said the Philippines has great potential for the export of furniture, especially rattan-made furnishings, processed food, costume jewelry, marine products, and information technology.

Portugal, although a small country, with a population of 10 million, has an area of responsibility 63 times its land territory, presenting a huge challenge to the 11,000-strong navy. Its Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center extends all the way across the Atlantic providing medical evacuations at sea of injured or seriously ill Filipino seafarers, mostly from chemical tankers and cargo ships.

His proposal to establish linkages between the Portuguese Navy and Philippine counterpart, through exchange of visits and technical cooperation in the field of research and rescue operations and marine environmental protection was responded to favorably by Admiral Jose Carlos Saldanha Lopes, Chief of Naval Staff of the Marinha Portuguesa (Portuguese Navy), at the Navy Headquarters in Lisbon.

Ambassador Lhuillier thanked the Portuguese Navy and Air Force for helping evacuate sick or injured Filipino seafarers from chemical tankers and cargo ships transiting the waters off the Portuguese coast. Every year, the Philippine Embassy receives a number of reports about Filipino seafarers evacuated to the Açores and Madeira islands for emergency reasons.

Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier paid a courtesy call to Admiral José Carlos Torrado Saldanha Lopes, Chief of Naval Staff of the Marinha Portuguesa (Portuguese Navy) on April 16, 2013 at the Navy Headquarters in Lisbon.

During the meeting, Ambassador Lhuillier said that the Philippines and Portugal share the same interest to protect and preserve its extensive maritime jurisdiction. As an archipelagic country with a coast line of more than 36,000 kilometers, the Philippines carries the huge task of managing and maximizing the use of its vast marine resources. Admiral Lopes agreed with the Ambassador and acknowledged that the Navy covers an area of responsibility that is 63 times its land territory presenting a huge challenge for the 11,000-strong Navy.

The Ambassador conveyed the gratitude of the Philippine government for the assistance provided by the Navy and the Air Force during medical evacuations at sea of injured and seriously-ill Filipino seafarers, mostly from chemical tankers and cargo ships transiting the waters off the Portuguese coast. Every year, the Philippine Embassy receives a number of reports about Filipino seafarers evacuated to the islands of the Açores and Madeira for emergency reasons.

Ambassador Lhuillier credits the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centers (MRCC Lisboa and Delgada) for the timely reporting of maritime incidents involving Filipino nationals which enables the Embassy to react quickly and to provide the necessary assistance for the Filipino crew and up-to-date information for their families in the Philippines.

Admiral Lopes responded favorably to the proposal of the Ambassador to establish linkage between the Portuguese Navy and the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard through exchange visits and technical cooperation in the fields of search and rescue operations and marine environmental protection. The Ambassador also invited the Admiral to consider the possibility of sending a cadet to study in the Philippine Military Academy.

After their meeting, a briefing presentation on the organization, mission, and functions of the Portuguese Navy was given by the Navy staff. Also present during the briefing was Rear Admiral José Luis Branco Seabra de Melo, Chief of Staff of Admiral Lopes and Third Secretary and Vice Consul Rogelio Villanueva, Jr. who was a former Navy and Coast Guard Officer.

Admiral Melo highlighted the dual character of the Portuguese Navy as having both military and civilian functions. Under its unique organizational setup, the Navy includes the Fleet, Maritime Police, Hydrographic Institute, Maritime Department, and the Naval Academy with the Chief of Naval Staff serving as head of both the Navy and the National Maritime Authority.

The Ambassador was informed that the Portuguese Navy’s frigate NRP Alvares Cabral will be the flagship of the Operation Atalanta of the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) created to combat acts of piracy off the coast of Somalia and escort ships under the UN´s World Food Program and the AMISOM from April to August this year. Ambassador Lhuillier mentioned that the Philippines gives great importance to the issue of piracy off the coast of Somalia due to the frequent cases of Filipino seafarers being held captives by pirates. In support of this, the Philippine Navy has deployed a Liaison Officer to the Combined Task Force based in Manama, Bahrain.

The Ambassador thanked the Navy leadership for the warm welcome accorded to him and expressed hope that the visit made will provide the impetus for greater collaboration between the uniformed services of both countries.

Dubai - Shifty forward Richel Hey Falcon led all scorers with 38 points in regulation and added six more in extra time, as the MMXII-United Cebuano’s eked out an emphatic win 87-82 over Fiesta Pinoy in the PEBC/Cebuana Lhuillier UAE Cup at the Al Shabab Club last April 5.

Former PBA Manila stalwart Allan Yu and PBA-Dubai two-time MVP Kiko Delos Reyes scored 25 and 16 points respectively, to provide the early scoring binge for Fiesta Pinoy as they kept MMXII at bay. Art Canlas scored on an undergoal stab as they padded their biggest lead (59-44) barely a minute left in the third period.

Falcon ignited a 7-2 run including a buzzer-beating three-pointer to cut the deficit 51-61 at the end of 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, sensing the vacuum left by Delos Reyes inside the shaded lane with his fifth foul, Falcon continued unabated driving to the hoop collecting 10 points while Minerva and Reveche combined for five in a 17-8 onslaught that brought them breathing down their opponents’ neck, 68-69 with 3:21 remaining.

La Consolacion College honor graduates receive medals from PJLFI

In recognition of academic achievements, PJ Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (PJLFI), led by Executive Trustee Atty. Cesar Vidal, awarded medals to 20 students who graduated with flying colors during the La Consolacion College (LCC) Commencement Exercises on March 22 and 23 in Bais City, Negros Oriental.

From the eight PJLFI graduating scholars for school year 2012-2013, included in the recognition were Elma Mikka Ramirez and Thanie Bless Niña Nada who received second honorable distinction and special academic award, respectively.

Since 2001, the P.J. Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. has produced a total of 43 graduates from LCC, over 50 % of whom were with honors and received special awards.

PEBC-Lhuillier UAE Cup 2013 opens in Dubai

Pinoy basketball teams, fanatics, sponsors and organizers gather for the 1st PEBC-Cebuana Lhuillier UAE Cup as it kicked off last Friday, March 15 at Al Shabab Sports Complex, Dubai.

Carrying out its commitment to sports among Filipinos and OFW in the UAE, the first collaboration between the Philippine Expat Basketball Club (PEBC) and Cebuana Lhuillier aims to unite the best teams and players in the UAE.

The event was officially opened through the relay of ceremonial torch as represented by Team Captains and the recognized ex-professional players from MBA, PBL, and Collegiate players now working and living in the emirates. Teams paraded with their respective muses.

Government sectors are also backing up the event. Labour Attache, Atty. Delmer Cruz graced the opening and announced that POLO-OWWA, SSS and PAG-IBIG Funds will be setting up extension service booths every Friday at the venue to cater to the needs of the OFWs for memberships, payments and other request of assistance.

Mr. Atallah Muhammad Habib, publisher and editor-in-chief of Kabayan Weekly was also recognized as the Honorary Commissioner of PEBC.

Special awards were given to Fiesta Pinoy- Dubai Legends for Best in Uniform and Ms. Maribel Alcantara of Team Titans.

Teams from different categories will play at the hardcourt every Friday from 10am-5pm for 18 weeks. Exciting prizes and raffle draws await spectators courtesy of various sponsors.

Typhoon Pablo victims receive donation from Cebuana Lhuillier

Reaffirming its dedication of being a reliable microinsurance partner, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CLIS) continues to manifest its commitment “may malasakit” by paying out claims outside its insurance coverage to typhoon victims.

Cebuana Lhuillier officers organized an Alagang Cebuana Plus (ACP) claims cash aid payout at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Brgy. Trento, Agusan del Sur. The event was intended to benefit Cebuana Lhuillier customers who availed of ACP and whose houses were either washed out or damaged by typhoon Pablo last December 4. Although claims cases due to floods are not covered by ACP, Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier readily agreed to CLIS’ financial assistance program to address the needs of the typhoon victims. For every Certificate of Cover (COC) availed by a customer, a corresponding cash amounting to Php 500 was given as financial aid. The customers can claim up to a maximum of five COCs or Php 2,500 per household. A total of Php 157,000 was handed out to 137 households.

The event was graced by Trento Mayor John Mark Billanes and Brgy. Poblacion Councilor Tessie Antonio and was supported by CLIS General Manager Jonathan Batangan, Regional Manager Eduardo Flores together with other officers of Cebuana Lhuillier.

Ambassador Lhuillier visits Filipino crew of damaged chemical tanker in Lisbon

The Philippine Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal headed by Philippine Ambassador to Portugal and PJLI Chairman Philippe Lhuillier visited the 13 Filipino crew members on board the damaged chemical tanker MT Harbour Krystal to provide assistance and counselling.

According to the report of the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center (MRCC) Lisbon to the Embassy, the 11,262 dwt (dead weight tonnage) Bahamas-flagged chemical tanker owned by Nordic Tankers of Denmark suffered an explosion in the early morning of March 06 in the forward compartment of the ship while it was anchored in the Port of Setubal in Portugal. The explosion caused a huge fire in the ship carrying a cargo of light virgin flammable liquid called Naptha.

The Filipino crew shared their frightening experiences during the incident to Ambassador Lhuillier and narrated how they survived.

The accident which happened 30 miles south of Lisbon as the ship was sailing from Port de Bouc in France to Amsterdam left one Filipino seafarer missing after the blast. Despite extensive search operations conducted by Portuguese maritime and air units, the Filipino seaman remains missing.

Spearheaded by Ambassador Lhuillier, the Embassy team checked on the condition of the crew. Some of them exhibited signs of trauma and complained of not being able to sleep since the incident happened. With the help of Third Secretary and Vice Consul Rogelio Villanueva Jr., the team comforted and assured the survivors that their safety and well-being remains to be the priority of the Philippine Government.

The Embassy team returned to the ship the following day with a Lisbon-based Filipino priest, Rev. Fr. Jovito Osalvo who officiated a mass. Prayers were offered for the crew’s emotional and spiritual healing, especially for the missing Filipino seafarer.

Through the help of the embassy, the Filipino crew were granted shore leave and free transportation on March 10 to attend a mass with the Filipino Community at the Igreja do Corpo Santo in Lisbon. Ambassador Lhuillier assured the Filipino crew that the embassy will continue to look after their welfare in coordination with the ship owner and their manning agency.

12 Years of being a Home to the Homeless

In 2011, typhoon Sendong, the deadliest storm to hit the Philippines in 14 years, brought most of its destructive wind and rain in Northern Mindanao, particularly in Iligan City. Two years after the devastation, storm victims from the far-flung areas of Iligan City still cry for help.

In answer to this call, P.J. Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (PJLFI), the social responsibility arm of Cebuana Lhuillier, donated Php 204,000.00 to the distressed families in Sitios Panoroganan and Kalilangan in Iligan City which will be used to build 12 new homes. An act which significantly represents the Foundation’s 12 years of providing true and incomparable service to the Filipinos.
